The Navigator is of limited use as an outlining tool, for three reasons. (1) No word wrap. Most of the time, I can't see what I'm working on. So Navigator is okay to sort by short headings, like chapter titles, but cannot function as a real outliner for any (2) Cannot be edited. This is a biggie. (3) Change focus does not work independently of the main document. So for instance I can't minimize the main document and just see the outline, or put the outline and the main document on separate work spaces.
Hi Susan, You can undock the navigator (drag it with mouse somewhere on the toolbar) and then make it wider and put on another space, I think. What do you mean with edit? thanks for reporting, Cor
I cannot make the Navigator go on Desktop 1 and the text body go on Desktop 2, I also cannot minimize the text body without minimizing the navigator. So if I have long headings and need a wide navigator, I can't see the text quickly. Word wrap is needed because my headings are VERY long. I have headings that are longer than my screen is wide, and I'm sure many people do. In addition, it's hard to read text that goes L-R for 14 inches, single-spaced, which this does. I would like to be able to edit text from the navigator panel. My headings represent my organizational structure, and often I need to edit it independently of my main document.

Should be solved by the above. If not, it is an OS/Window manager issue > Word wrap is needed because my headings are VERY long. I have headings that > are longer than my screen is wide, and I'm sure many people do. In addition, > it's hard to read text that goes L-R for 14 inches, single-spaced, which > this does. Indeed, very long. > I would like to be able to edit text from the navigator panel. My headings > represent my organizational structure, and often I need to edit it > independently of my main document. OK, direct editing of the titles. Now it is a good habit to make one issue for each bug/enhancement request. I change this issue to Word wrap. Would you please be so kind to write a separate issue for the editing of the header titles? thanks, Cor
Hi, Cor. So here are my three bugs. Sorry for my earlier sloppiness. Bug 91699 (this one) is about Writer Navigator word wrap. Bug 91858 is about Writer Navigator -- controlling the buttons at the top. Bug 91705 is about Writer Navigator being editable in the Navigator window.
Retested with 24.2. Word wrap is not available. Version: 24.2.0.0.alpha1+ (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community Build ID: c8f7408db73d2f2ccacb25a2b4fef8dfebdfc6cb CPU threads: 16; OS: Linux 6.2; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3 Locale: ro-RO (ro_RO.UTF-8); UI: en-US Calc: threaded
