Description Philippe Jung 2015-07-08 10:32:05 UTC
The Paragraph Style List 1 should also set the bullet style Bullet 1

Moreover the French translation of paragraph style "List 1" is rather translated as "Bullet 1"

As a end user point of view, when writing lists, I expect numbered paragraph or bulleted paragraphs.

=> I think we should update paragraph styles "List n" to "Bullet Lists n" and ensure that, by default, setting paragraph style "Bullet Lists n" also set bullet style "Bullet n"

Hi Philippe,

Thanks for reporting.
I see no problem with this. But to be safe, asking Regina and Sophie too.

Mind that it's then needed for all List 1 variations, i.e.
List 1, List 1 Start, List 1 Cont., List 1 End.
etc.

Ciao - Cor

There is a problem probably only in French:

If the behaviour is not changed, the french translation of the paragraph style mentions bullets where the english version mentions only Lists. And the current behaviour creates list with no bullet.

But there is also a request for enhancement:

Transform these styles to bullet list. Or add new paragraph styles for bullet lists.

I have always used numbered and bullet list when writing my doc. I never wrote list with no bullet (They are just standard paragraphs with a higher left margin)

Analogy with HTML : UL/LI and OL/LI

@regina, @sophie: what is your take on this?

The category is "List styles" which covers numbered lists and bullet list. I agree, that it is confusing to have a style named "List 1" and that should be changed to "Bullets 1" or similar.

In German the category is "Listenvorlagen" and the items are "Aufzählung #" and "Nummerierung #". That is the same wording as in the German version of Word. I haven't got another UI language for Word, at least in the English tooltip of Word I read "Bullets" and "Numbering". We should look, how Word names this styles, to help users to migrate.

The problem, that the paragraph styles have not set the list styles in its setting as default, is a different problem. I consider the current solution as bad. Reason: Currently we have 40 paragraph styles, which do nearly nothing. The user always needs to customize them to make them work, and on the other hand the user cannot delete them.

Therefore I suggest to (1) associate the corresponding list styles as default or (2) to reduce them to about 3 styles with staggered indentation but without number/bullet or (3) drop them at all. In case the corresponding list styles are associated as default, the paragraph styles need to have the same naming as the corresponding list style.

In my personal use of Writer I prefer solution (3). But I see, that users migrating from Word would like solution (1). In Word there exists paragraph styles with integrated numbering, paragraph styles with integrated bullets and -as third kind- paragraph styles with only staggered indentation.

In bug 124471 I changed names of bullet list styles from "List N" to "Bullet <bullet sign>", but I didn't touch setting of default styles
