In View > Master Slide one can edit the styles of the various placeholders. Not the style Subtitle. It is available in Styles and Formatting, but when one sets all the styles in Master slide and do not notice that the Subtitle is not showing up there, the result when choosing a layout with Subtitle may raise questions.
new as per bug 102302
As suggested in bug 102302 comment 8, the most ideal thing would be to add a first line to the 'object area for autolayouts' placeholder textbox which has the text 'Click to edit the subtitle', the this textbox's dimension is what is used in the Title Slide layout.

Still a bit vague, but maybe the easiest thing to do at the moment yes.

Correction: as this textbox's > Still a bit vague, but maybe the easiest thing to do at the moment yes. Alot easier than displaying another placeholder for subtitle and having uses modify its dimension to be exactly the same size as the outline placeholder.
still the case in current master
Subtitle as well as Outline 8 and 9 are still only accessible via the Stylist. What do you think UX can contribute? Jay's proposal in comment 2 sounds good to me.

Correct, but - let's be honest - rarely used compared to Subtitles. > What do you think UX can contribute? Jay's proposal in comment 2 > sounds good to me. A section/subline under the title looks the better place to me. (Also since the horizontal position of the subtitle text box follows what is set as position of the title in the master slide.)

Back to NEW then
So, I'm considering this issue from the point of view of wanting a "Title+Subtitle" layout like the one in attachment 198728 [details] - which is available in MSO, and is very popular for presentation title slides. Naturally, I would need the ability for the position and size of the subtitle element to be set. But - I would _not_ need that in a master slide which doesn't have a subtitle. And the default master slide doesn't have a subtitle, nor should it really have one. And that's not even all: The position of a subtitle in the kind of slide I'm after will definitely _not_ be appropriate for the default master; and the same will be true for the position of the title element. Obviously, I disagree with Yousuf's suggestion comment #2 about sticking a subtitle into the 'object area for autolayouts'. It won't allow for the kind of placement that typical use of subtitles needs, and it it will very possibly mess up the master of typical, no-subtitle, slides. And this is all to suggest the strong link between this issue and bug 62332.
