Description Harald Koester 2018-07-18 21:46:49 UTC
At the bottom of the Modify Style dialogue there are several buttons which functions are not documented.

In order to open the dialogue:
(a) Open list of styles with F11.
(b) Choose style type (paragraph, character, …) at the top of the style list.
(c) Right click on a style and choose Modify…

These buttons are displayed at the bottom of the dialogue: OK, Apply, Cancel, Reset and Standard. In the help I did not found a description how these buttons work. Expected: The functions of the buttons should be documented in the help because the functions are not self-explaining.

As far as I tested the buttons, these are the functions.
[a] OK: Changes of all tabs are saved, dialogue is closed.
[b] Apply: Changes of all tabs are saved, dialogue is not closed.
[c] Cancel: Changes of all tabs are not saved, dialogue is closed.
[d] Reset: Changes of current tab are undone but not saved, dialogue is not closed.
[e] Standard: Changes of current tab are reset to inherited values but not saved, dialogue is not closed. (Button not available for page and list styles)

Furthermore I propose to display tips with the function of each button, if the cursor rests on a button.

indeed the function of Reset and Standard may be confusing
for the tool tips, see bug #122479

Despite searching the helpfiles and the Internet, I could find no documentation on the general buttons of the Style dialogues, i.e.: RESET, APPLY, STANDARD, OK, CANCEL. It's seems to be taken for granted that their functions are self-evident—but they are not.

I strongly support this request and am surprised that it has still not been actioned after two years.

Most buttons can and do have a tooltip now. But I disagree with adding a tooltip to Okay and Cancel. Even beginners should know what those buttons do, and it's rather confusing when they get a hint for some potential unexpected behavior.

The statement "no documentation anywhere, not self-evident" needs evidence itself.

tdf#118834 dialog buttons to Character Style,Organizer,Font,Outline&List
Comment 10 sdc.blanco 2021-03-30 22:09:03 UTC
1. Standard is now called “Reset to Parent” (bug 128469)

2.Tooltips and extended tooltips added (starting with 7.2) for “Reset to Parent”, Apply, and Reset. (also from bug 128469)

3. Explanations for “Reset to Parent”, and “Reset” and “Apply” appropriate to style dialogues were added.

4. Help pages for “Organizer” tab and “Character Style” have all buttons explained now. Not ideal, but searching in help would enable one to find “Reset to Parent” (and then see the other buttons)

Character Style: https://help.libreoffice.org/7.2/en-US/text/swriter/01/05130002.html
Organizer: https://help.libreoffice.org/7.2/en-US/text/shared/01/05040100.html

5. Page Style, List Style now have Reset, Apply, Ok, and Cancel (dialogue does not have “Reset to Parent”)

List Style: https://help.libreoffice.org/7.2/en-US/text/swriter/01/05130004.html
Page Style: https://help.libreoffice.org/7.2/en-US/text/swriter/01/05040000.html

6. Font already had “reset”, updated to include the other buttons.
Font: https://help.libreoffice.org/7.2/en-US/text/shared/01/05020100.html

7. Outline & List already had Reset and Apply (but the wrong one). Now updated to include correct Apply and “Reset to Parent”
https://help.libreoffice.org/7.2/en-US/text/swriter/01/05030800.html.

The only “missing” issue among the issues raised in the OP is tooltips for “Ok” and “Cancel”. If you still think that is important in the style dialogues, despite comment 5, the please open a new ticket for that enhancement proposal.

Because almost all have been addressed, closing this bug as FIXED.
