Description sstory 2023-01-24 15:11:43 UTC
Description:
This is a feature request.
It would be great if the Character and Paragraph dialogs used in Writer had an Apply button.

Why?
When I highlight text and, for example want to change kerning. I must hit OK and the window closes and if that's not right, open it and tweak some more. This is unfriendly from the user's perspective. Being able to hit Apply while the dialog window is still open and see the changes reflected immediately is more in the way that a normal user would like to use the program. Scribus, for example, does this with styles and such.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Select some text you want to format
2.Right-click, choose Character or Paragraph
3.Make changes repeatedly to tweak kerning or whatever

Actual Results:
Clicking OK, the dialog closes and must be reopened repeating the steps again and again to tweak things.

Expected Results:
I hope to see an Apply button to click and see instant results without dialog closing to only need reopening repeating the steps again and again.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
Offered an Apply button and not close the dialog.

The style modification dialog that opens from the Stylist at the sidebar does have apply/reset functions. If you change the paragraph style directly (right click in the document) it is still direct formatting and affects only this particular paragraph. My take: WF.

See also bug 130264 and bug 130261.

I did not notice that it had kerning in that panel. At least there is a workable way to do it. Since people use the multiple mechanisms provided to do direct formatting, my suggestion would still be an improvement to the software. I will try to remember to use the style panel in the meantime.

Thanks

Hieko, in general, I prefer to close bugs, not to open a new one, but in this case, I would prefer to have an "Apply" on these 2 windows: Character and Paragraph. I use a lot those windows and I also miss this button. Could you please add this on the next Design meeting list?

Searching for "Apply Paragraph" returns 50 results, bug 89028 pointing to 37336 for example. But what about my comment 1 (apply on style changes but not direct formatting)?

If you think this view is wrong feel free to add needsUXEval and I route it through the process.

For long documents I use styles, but for small documents I work faster with right click and use Character and Paragraph options. So, in my opinion, I would close this bug as a duplicate for tdf#89028.

If you need 20 changes in 5 minutes, you need to see how the text will look like, so it is annoying to click Ok, and the text is not ok, and again change, press Ok, the text is not ok...
