Dear LibreOffice team, Current functionality of LO Writer only allows for a footnotes (e.g. under the body text) placed each on a separate line. As a result no normal publishing experience and results could be achieved, as the footnotes pile up on the left taking most of the space, while an empty and unused space is formed on the right. This renders otherwise a great product as LO Writer actually useless in many professional typography cases, where footnotes flexibility is needed. Request: Please allow for a full flexibility in the footnote text layout: - Inline footnotes: Placed on the same line as the space allows - Multi-column layout: Define the number of columns (e.g. 1, or 4, or 5, …), width and spacing, separator lines, as in the normal text body layout formatting. - Mixed layout: Manually format the footnotes layout allowing for some footnotes to be placed inline, and other in a multi-column-paragraph layout, as needed.
Please have a look at the already existing bug reports about footnote layout, e.g. bug 90921 or bug 112064 and their duplicates. What aspect of your request is not covered by these bug reports?
I find it great that some aspects of the footnotes formatting topic are already in discussion. What is not covered, I would say, is the holistic aproach, where we have a full flexibility to manage the footnotes formatting (as proposed in the OP), becuase that is what realy is needed regarding footnotes when one would try to use Writer as a typography tool, e.g. preparing a book for printing, or a math related article, or tons of other cases. There are all kinds of cases, where that fn felxibilitiy is painfuly needed, and the current functionality is unfortunately far from being able to serve those various cases.
(please delete my prev post, as typing in a hurry I’ve left a lot of typos) I find it great that some aspects of the footnotes formatting topic are already in discussion. What is not covered, I would say, is the holistic approach, where we have a full flexibility to manage the footnotes formatting (as shared in the OP), because that is what early is needed regarding footnotes when one would try to use Writer as a typography tool, e.g. preparing a book for printing. There are all kinds of cases, where that fn flexibility is painfully needed, and the current functionality is unfortunately far from being able to serve those various cases.
