Description Ruslan Kabatsayev 2012-04-28 11:45:04 UTC
How to see this:
0. Start Writer
1. Insert a table (e.g. 3x3)
2. Figure out how to move it around the document, it appears:
 a) no simple drag and drop supported for this
 b) to move vertically you can do this by e.g. making some line feeds before the table
 c) to move horizontally you can try moving cell borders starting from the nearest to the direction of moving - of course, you'll have to try hard to get cells correctly sized after this

There are some other ways of the same ugliness to have the task done.

Now, as a nicer workaround, you might want to start a Calc session, make a table there and copy&paste this table into Writer. Then you can move it as if it were an image, while you can still edit it by double-clicking it.
Of course, this is still quite cumbersome, so it'd be better to just have drag'n'drop support for normal Writer tables.

For comparison, M$ Word 2003 provides you an easy way drag'n'drop any tables.

AFAIK that is a known limitation of the OOo / LibO WRITER TABLE concept. Additionally you can't wrap around text, ...
The simple solution is to create the table in Frame, I doubt that interest in new features is big enough to rethink the problem.

Maybe this could be fixed by making all the tables have a frame by default? It seems this should be easy to implement.
Comment 3 László Németh 2013-02-27 11:06:41 UTC
There is an easy way to create a frame around a table:

1. Table » Select » Table (or double Ctrl-A in a table)
2. Insert » Frame

Or with two clicks:

1. Click on the corner of the table to select it.
2. Click on the Insert Frame Manually icon of the Insert toolbar.

Check also the Alignment » Automatic option of the table for automatic resizing of the column widths with the frame width, if needed.

But I support the idea to add a little button to the table corner or something similar to simplify (to be more intuitive) the frame conversion (it may be good for a GSoC project, too).

When the breadth of a column is bad in a table, when I repair it, the full breadth will be vary. But if I modify the breadth of a column, the full breadth of a table does nor vary, but varies the breadth of all other column. If I modify the full breadth of the table, breadth of all column varies. But I want if I modify a column, remain the all others, or if I modify the full breadth, I want to give a column what to be vary, remain all others.
I can not select some columns, to set the breadth to the same given value.
It was very hard to create the attachment.

just convenient for some tasks: click Alt+Left/Right for column width and Alt+Up/Down for height

Is this bug report also about conveniently resizing tables, or only about the easy movability? I see it mentioned in the title, but nowhere else.

For resizing tables, Word has a handle in the bottom right corner of the table, and the table can be easily resized by dragging that handle.

While the free movement would require support for floating tables, adding drag-and-drop resize doesn't.

Let's limit this to moving, to match comment #0.
